Navigating the Organization – Helping junior women get on board
This fast-paced program fills a knowledge gap for young, multicultural women on a
professional track but with no prior organizational experience. As they learn the ground
rules for success in the corporate world and come to understand its political nature, they
become more productive team members and more likely to remain with the
organization. Specifically, they learn how to be successful in their own companies.
The program introduces novice women to new, multidimensional responses to
workplace challenges. It blends their instinctively strategic approach with a more
complete-and more accurate-assessment of the organizational, political, and cultural
ramification of their decisions and actions.
Because they learn from their colleagues as well as the expert faculty, women find this
to be an exciting, confidence-building experience. And, as with every ASCENT program,
multicultural women walk away with a new network of colleagues at similar places in
their careers, facing similar challenges-a network that can offer sustaining support for
a lifetime.
Program topics are broadly divided into two areas and include:
Attitude and perception
- setting reasonable expectations
- understanding yourself as a developing leader
- understanding responsibilities
- defining good performance
- receiving constructive feedback
- deciphering corporate culture and responding appropriately
Support and growth
- building authentic relationships
- finding mentors and allies among diverse co-workers
- becoming a stakeholder
- continuing professional development
- social networking and professional etiquette
Also included is practical advice on how to approach job performance and reviews.
The program uses simulations, role interaction, and classroom analysis-all delivered in
a no-nonsense style by experienced practitioners-to build real-world savvy in women
who have demonstrated achievement but are relatively unseasoned.
Upon successful completion of this program, participants receive an Organizational
Navigation Certificate from both the Tuck School of Business and the Anderson School
of Management.
This "push in the right direction" increases self-confidence and prepares women to take on additional responsibility while maintaining balance in their lives, both professionally and personally.
