OUR HISTORY

Recognizing that multicultural women exist as an invisible class at the intersection of race and gender, Ella L.J. Edmonson Bell PhD set out in 2004 to create a leadership institute to advance these women in American corporations. With the assistance of a planning grant from Bank One (now JPMorgan Chase) and a subsequent grant by Intel Corporation, Professor Bell convened a prestigious steering committee to develop her concept and to create the strategic plan that ultimately led to the creation of ASCENT-Leading Multicultural Women to the Top. It is classified by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt public charity qualified to receive tax-deductible gifts.

A blue-chip board of business and program advisors are joined by officers who oversee ASCENT's business operations, educational design, communication, and strategic development.

ASCENT has joined forces with the top-ranked Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth to develop effective educational programs. Tuck Executive Education at Dartmouth offered the world's first programs for minority executives in 1980, and the Tuck School was the first educational institution inducted into the Minority Business Hall of Fame. In addition, the Tuck school consistently places at or near the top of all major rankings and was recently ranked #1 by Forbes for return on investment and #1 in The Wall Street Journal survey of corporate recruiters.
