Michael Chapman
Executive Director

Michael Chapman, a member of the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin, has directed one statewide, one regional, and three national organizations. He is one of this country’s leading authorities on corporate and foundation fundraising, having raised more than $100 million for his clients. He is also the former chairman of his tribe, taking office on the 25th anniversary of his mother’s assuming the same role.

Mr. Chapman comes to ASCENT as an alumnus of Leadership Greater Chicago and the Kellogg National Fellows Program. He co-designed Americans for Indian Opportunity’s Ambassador Program, which is now international in scope, and he advises First Nations Development Institute’s national Native not-for-profit leadership program.

Mr. Chapman has represented a wide sector of Native America, including the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, Americans for Indian Opportunity, the Council of Energy Resource Tribes, First Nations Development Institute, the National Congress of American Indians, and the Native American Rights Fund. The Casey Family Program, the Ford Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation have also retained him.

For five years during the administration of President Bill Clinton, Mr. Chapman served as special assistant to the deputy commissioner and the assistant secretary–Indian Affairs at the Department of Interior. He was also staff advisor to the President’s Commission on National and Community Service (1993–94). He served the first Bush administration as coordinator of the White House Conference on Indian Education (1991–92).

Mr. Chapman has been president of the American Student Association; communications, deputy, and acting director of the National Congress of American Indians; assistant to the president of NAES College; and associate and acting director of the American Indian Business Association. Most recently, he served as chairman of the Menominee Tribe, where he oversaw a $70 million governmental operation with more than 800 employees. Prior to assuming his professional duties, he was both a congressional and White House intern. He attended the University of Wisconsin’s Green Bay and Madison campuses and received his bachelor’s degree in community studies, with a minor in nonprofit management, from Native American Educational Services College.

Currently, he serves on boards of Americans for Indian Opportunity, College of the Menominee Nation, and is chairman of the Leadership Circle for East-West University’s Keshena Campus.



Carolyn J. Henderson
Director of Coaches

Carolyn J. Henderson is the founder and president of The Henderson Group and More Than Leaves Coaching. The Henderson Group is a human resources consulting firm specializing in strategic HR planning and development, managerial/leadership coaching, personal-life and professional coaching, and organizational effectiveness, including training and development in performance management, teamwork and team building, ethics, diversity, and giving and receiving feed-forward.

Ms. Henderson has nearly 30 years experience as a human resources and business consultant in both Fortune 500 companies and the public sector. She is also a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR). She began her career at AT&T and has worked for Corning Incorporated, Wachovia Corporation, and the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Ms. Henderson has trained with the Coaches Training Institute in Alexandria, Va., and is a member both of the International Association of Coaches and Coachville, USA. She received dual bachelor’s of science degrees in business administration and organizational behavior from the University of Colorado at Boulder and is now a master’s candidate in counseling and divinity at Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary.
